An instructional letter tells about our program and requirements. All applications must be received through the Electronic Residency Application System (ERAS) and we participate in the National Residency Matching Program (NRMP).
The primary goal of this 36-month advanced training program is to prepare qualified trainees for a career in the discipline of gastroenterology, including hepatology, while allowing flexibility to permit trainees the opportunity to prepare for a range of career options.
Candidates for the program must be graduates of an ACGME-accredited Internal Medicine residency program. They must be eligible for a limited or unrestricted medical license in the state of Mississippi. Each must have completed the requirements for eligibility to take the Board examinations in Internal Medicine.
All trainees will participate in the core content (18-30 months) of the program. It is recognized from the onset that some trainees would require more consultative and basic endoscopic training than others who may desire and/or need more research time. The wide range is provided to give the program director flexibility in individualizing the cognitive/consultative and endoscopic portions of the clinical component based on:
The overriding goal is that each trainee be able to practice as an independent consultant and perform basic endoscopy (level I or tier I) by the time he/she graduates. In addition to the core-content, the program will offer two tracks in the second (6-18) months. Each candidate will be expected to declare his/her choice shortly after entry into the program.
The clinical track is designed to prepare an individual for primary activity in clinical medicine. The faculty will attempt to build a program that best prepares each trainee for their individual projected career.
The clinical investigator track is designed to provide a foundation for further development as an academic and career scientist.
Evidence for attainment of these goals in both the clinical track and the clinical investigator track will be satisfactory evaluations by the faculty, performance on in-service examinations (when available), and a passing score on the ABIM board examination in gastroenterology, as well as active participation in one or more research projects, followed by presentation of the work at a national meeting plus publication of at least two articles in peer-review journals.
All trainees will be expected to produce at least two papers in peer-reviewed journals outlining the results of their research project/s during their 36-month curriculum. This scholarly activity is required before the trainee will be considered for certification by the program director as eligible for the ABIM subspecialty Board examination. Actual publication of the articles as a requirement is at the discretion of the Program director if the trainee has completed a research protocol and manuscripts are in preparation or have been submitted to a journal(s).
All trainees will plan, initiate and execute at least two scholarly clinical research projects (or one basic science) under faculty supervision. The groundwork for such an activity will be initiated within the first year of the fellowship program under the mentorship of a faculty member. It is recognized that while basic science projects usually require one block of dedicated research time, some clinical projects depending upon the protocol may be spread intermittently over longer periods.
For example, a trainee may be involved with endoscopy training for 2-4 hours in the morning and spend the remainder of the day in research. Fellows choosing a clinical/endoscopy related project(s) may have some combined clinical/endoscopy/research rotations so as to give them an enhanced ability to identify from a large pool, the patients suitable for recruitment to their study protocols. The accumulated time for this activity will be not less than 6 months during the fellowship training. The success of this activity shall be documented by a publication(s) in a peer-reviewed journal. Publication or presentation of case reports is encouraged but may not be in lieu of a research project.
