Welcome to UMMC's Department of Medicine website. We place a great emphasis on our student programs. Medical student education is of vital importance to our department, and we take pride in the many courses that we offer. At the heart of our student programs is the Internal Medicine Clerkship. We have an eight-week rotation during the student's third year of medical school. During these eight weeks, students refine their diagnostic and clinical decision-making skills. Students attend morning report and clinical pearls sessions as well as MKSAP for Student reviews with the chief residents, chairman's rounds and EKG/CXR, and lab interpretation talks.
We strive to make each formal teaching session as interactive as possible to best engage our adult learners. Eight weeks are spent on the University and VA ward services with four weeks spent at each location where the students are able to take call with their resident teams. All patient encounters during this rotation have faculty and resident supervision. We also offer several elective opportunities during the third-year elective blocks. Students may choose from geriatrics, pulmonary, infectious disease, rheumatology, endocrinology, general internal medicine and hematology/oncology. On each of these rotations, they will have the opportunity to spend two weeks in our outpatient clinics. The other required course offered through the Department of Medicine is a fourth-year acting internship. We strive to create an experience that mirrors a medicine internship as closely as possible. The students on this month-long rotation are assigned their own patients and answer directly to the senior resident. They take call as well as attend morning sign ins and noon conferences with their assigned teams. In preparation for the increased responsibility they will have as interns, our goal is to expose fourth-year students to a solid foundation of inpatient, general, internal medicine.
