Welcome to Our Program

Welcome from Our Chairman

Thank you for considering the Internal Medicine residency program at UMMC in Jackson, Miss. As the only academic medical center in Mississippi, we offer unique training opportunities. We receive referrals from across the state and region, we do not compete with other hospitals for state funds, we have access to the foremost medical technology, and we have an expanding faculty base committed to enhancing our educational programs.

Dr. Dan JonesThe leadership and faculty of the Department of Medicine have a strong commitment to providing excellent educational experiences for our students, residents and fellows. Our formal training initiatives include an internal medicine residency program, a combined medicine-pediatrics training program, and fellowships in 10 subspecialty areas. For nine of the past 10 years we have been elected the "Best Clinical Department" by the Evers Society. Our resident's annual ABIM board exam pass rate has exceeded 98% over the past six years. Our residency programs are led by Dr. Shirley Schlessinger (vice chair for education and associate dean for GME), Dr. Vince Herrin (internal medicine program director) and Dr. Jimmy Stewart (med-peds program director).

I'm pleased to have re-engaged with the Department of Medicine in September 2015, as interim chair, but very saddened by the unexpected loss of Dr. William Little. My relationship with the Department of Medicine began as a medical student, continued through my years of internal medicine training, and resumed when I returned to the faculty in 1992. As a faculty member, the department offered me the needed support for my work as a clinician, educator, and researcher. During my years as dean, vice chancellor, and then chancellor, I proudly maintained my faculty appointment in the department. My most important relationship with the faculty of this department came over the last year as my friends and colleagues in Hematology saw me through a difficult illness with lymphoma. I literally owe my life to the good care of the faculty in our department.

The future opportunities for our department are exciting to contemplate. Our mission responsibilities related to education and clinical care will always be our highest priority. I'm pleased that the reputation the department has enjoyed for years is still intact and well deserved - for superb education of medical students, residents, and fellows and state of the art care of patients. But the opportunities for making the unhealthiest state in the nation healthier through our programs of clinical care, research, and education must drive us to seek continued growth and improvement. You are a part of these opportunities, as training the next generation of physicians and maintaining a high level of excellence throughout all of our educational programs supports these efforts.

If you are a student interested in interviewing for one of our positions, I particularly look forward to meeting you during one of our interview days or at another designated time.
