Program Leadership

Welcome to the Department of Medicine at UMMC! We are the largest department on campus, with 68 categorical internal medicine residents (22 internal medicine interns, 2 primary care interns, 23 PGY-2s and 24 PGY-3s), a combined Internal Medicine-Pediatrics residency program, and fellowship training programs in allergy/immunology, cardiology, interventional cardiology, endocrinology, gastroenterology, geriatrics, hematology/oncology, infectious diseases, nephrology, pulmonary/critical care and rheumatology.

The people who make up our program are our greatest asset. The residents in our department are intelligent, hardworking, dedicated physicians who routinely go the extra mile for their patients. Our faculty physicians are excellent clinicians who love to teach, are dedicated to academics, and challenge themselves daily to help good young doctors become great physicians. We are proud of our strong academic tradition. Our educational efforts are reflected in our residents' competence when they begin independent practice, whether in an academic or private setting, or when they continue training in subspecialty fellowships here and across the country.

The University Hospitals and Clinics and our affiliated Veterans Affairs Medical Center offer a broad variety of patients with acute and chronic medical conditions ranging from the routine to the rare. As the only academic health sciences center in our state, we see many patients with diagnostic or therapeutic dilemmas. Our clinics serve as primary care sites for many patients from Jackson and the surrounding areas, and our state of the art hospital is a tertiary care facility that provides over 29,000 inpatient visits per year.

Our chairman, Dr. Dan Jones, and all our educational leaders are dedicated to the personal and professional development of our residents. A sense of family permeates our lives at UMMC. Our residents and faculty combine to create an atmosphere of friendship, caring and commitment to learning. We offer state of the art clinical training, opportunities to participate in clinical and bench research, an individualized curriculum tailored to each trainee's career path, and the support to help residents and students meet their personal and professional goals.

We are happy that you have visited our website and would be delighted to have you visit in person. Feel free to contact us for more information.
