Journal Club

Once a month the residents meet in two groups to discuss articles chosen by upper-level residents who lead the discussion. Joining each resident at Journal Club is a faculty expert on the clinical matter of the article, who provides insight as to how the article has impacted his/her practice, as well as the associated program director for scholarly activity.

Hot topics in the medical literature, as well as landmark articles, have been the subject of the hour and have included the following:

  • Transfusion in septic shock
  • Applicability of the Wells score to inpatients
  • The pros and cons of contact isolation
  • Medical therapy vs. stenting for renal artery stenosis
  • Mindfulness, burnout and empathy among physicians
  • The use of procalcitonin in determining antibiotic need
  • Appropriate dosing of steroids for COPD exacerbations
  • The utility of D-dimer testing
  • Noninvasive ventilation in the field
  • Probiotics to reduce Clostridium difficile risk

Over the course of the three-year program, residents receive exposure to more than 60 separate literature concepts they are likely to encounter as they read the literature in their practice, ranging from the very basic, such as p-value and power, to the more complex, such as cluster randomized controlled trials.

Additionally, the resident receives feedback from the associated program director and chief residents who mentor the conference. This feedback has helped many of our residents enhance future presentations both locally and at regional and national scientific meetings.
