Division of Hematology/Oncology

The Division of Hematology/Oncology provides world-class care for patients and families with cancer or those with disorders of the blood or blood-forming organs. Staff strive to offer cutting edge therapy and to offer clinical trials for patient participation.

Clinical

Fellowship-trained physicians help diagnose and treat multiple cancers. Physicians and staff are engaged in research to develop new treatment regimens for many cancers.

The Oncology section focuses on solid tumors. Physicians participate in UMMC Cancer Institute programs for breast cancer, thoracic cancers, head and neck cancers, gastrointestinal cancers, genitourinary cancers, gynecologic cancers, melanoma and other skin cancers, sarcomas and neuro-oncologic cancers. The Hematology section focuses on patients with diseases of the blood or blood-forming organs. Physicians participate in UMMC Cancer Institute programs for leukemias, lymphomas, multiple myeloma and in programs for sickle cell anemia and benign blood disorders. LINK to list of physicians

Hematology also oversees a 12-bed bone marrow transplant unit certified by the Foundation for the Accreditation of Cellular Therapy.

Education

The division:

  • Offers nine fellowship positions annually
  • Oversees cancer education efforts for medical students and residents in internal medicine.
  • Provides continuing education for physicians and other medical caregivers at UMMC as well as physicians in the community.

Clinical research

Physicians seek clinical trials that will best suit their patients. The division:

  • Is a member of national cooperative cancer clinical trial groups.
  • Collaborates with translational scientists in the UMMC Cancer Institute to move findings that will benefit patients from the laboratory to the clinic. 
  • Includes faculty who are part of the UMMC Cancer Institute Ergon Scholars Program.
