Our Cardiovascular Diseases fellowship program is the only ACGME-accredited cardiovascular diseases program in Mississippi. It is a three-year program with ACGME approval for up to 15 fellows. As the state's only academic medical center, we are the referral center for the most complex cardiac cases. As a result, our trainees get ample experience dealing with everything from coronary artery disease, complex arrhythmias, valvular disorders, and heart failure to cardiac transplant, adult congenital heart disease and peripheral vascular disease.
Our Interventional Cardiology fellowship program is a one-year ACGME-accredited program with ACGME approval for up to two fellows per year. Our Interventional Cardiology fellowship program provides opportunities for advanced training in cardiac interventions. Our fellows also train in structural heart interventions, including TAVR and adult congenital heart disease, along with advanced vascular interventions for peripheral vascular disease and critical limb ischemia.
Our Adult Congenital Heart Disease fellowship program is a two-year program and was one of the first seven ACGME-accredited programs in the United States. We have ACGME approval to accept two fellows (one fellow per year).
Our fellowship programs are clinically oriented with our fellows easily meeting COCATS criteria for numbers of procedures. In accordance with the mission of UMMC, we emphasize patient care, education and research. Six months of the fellowship is dedicated to research where our fellows have the opportunity to take part in the Jackson Heart Study, a multimillion dollar NIH-funded study analogous to the Framingham Study for the African-American population based on a portion of the ARIC (Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities) Study,as well as collaborative efforts with our internationally renowned Department of Physiology.
We have clincal affiliations with other institutions in the Jackson area, including the Jackson Veterans Administration Medical Center, Merit Health River Oaks and Merit Health Crossgates. We are proud of what we have to offer through all of our training programs. They are the perfect blend of a program that is large enough to give exposure to the wide breadth of cardiovascular diseases while at the same time small enough to maintain a personal feel in a collegial atmosphere. We are committed to excellence and the highest standards of patient care, education and research.
Mississippi is a fertile ground for cardiovascular disease, and we are out to make a difference.
