Dr. Reckelhoff is currently professor and chair of the Department of Cell and Molecular Biology and director of the Women’s Health Research Center at UMMC. She received a BS degree in chemistry from the College of William and Mary, in Williamsburg, VA, and a PhD in biochemistry from Medical College of Virginia/Virginia Commonwealth University, in Richmond.
Dr. Reckelhoff also worked as a critical care nurse for 11 years prior to completing her BS and PhD degrees. She did a postdoctoral fellowship with Dr. George DeMartino at Texas Southwestern Medical School in Dallas and another one with Dr. Chris Baylis at West Virginia University in Morgantown, before coming to the University of Mississippi Medical Center as an assistant professor in physiology.
Dr. Reckelhoff’s research focuses on the mechanisms responsible for the sex differences in blood pressure control and renal disease, postmenopausal hypertension, and polycystic ovary syndrome. She is currently serving as the past president of the American Physiological Society made up of more than 10,000 members from around the world. She has received numerous awards, including the Harry Goldblatt Award in Cardiovascular Research from the American Heart Association (AHA) Council for High Blood Pressure Research, the Young Scholar Award from the American Society of Hypertension/Monarch Pharmaceuticals, the Lewis K. Dahl Award for Hypertension Research from the AHA Councilon Hypertension, and the Ernest Starling Lecture Award from the American Physiological Society.
Her research has been continuously funded by the National Institutes of Health since 1998. She currently holds an RO1 and has a project on a program project grant as principal investigator, and is the Principal investigator of a COBRE, Mississippi Center of Excellence in Perinatal Research. Dr. Reckelhoff is an associate editor for the American Journal of Physiology, Regulatory, Integrative and Comparative Physiology, and serves on the editorial board of several other journals. She is also on the parent committee for program project grant reviews at the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute of the NIH.
