Health Informatics and Information Management (HIIM) is a challenging career option for people interested in medicine, technology, and management. These are dynamic fields that blend healthcare information systems with business administration and management. Implementation of electronic health records has increased the need for skilled health informatics and information management (HIIM) individuals and has broadened opportunities for HIIM practice. Employment is found in a variety of organizations, including hospitals, clinics, rehabilitation centers, home health agencies, health plans, insurance agencies, governmental agencies, educational institutions, vendor organizations and research centers. Health Informatics (HI) professionals innovate healthcare delivery and impact patient outcomes by analyzing, designing, implementing, and evaluating information systems. Health informaticians assess the information needs of healthcare providers and consumers, evaluate and enhance clinical processes, and participate in the customization, development, implementation and evaluation of clinical information systems. Health Information Management (HIM) professionals are experts in managing the collection, storage, retrieval and interpretation of healthcare information. To provide the highest quality health care delivery, health information is used not only for patient care, but also in medico-legal issues, research, planning and evaluation. HIM professionals are vital to the daily operations management of health information and electronic health records (EHRs). They ensure a patient's health information and records are complete, accurate, and protected.

The mission of the Master of Health Informatics and Information Management (MHIIM) program is to educate outstanding professionals who can contribute to high quality health care through development, implementation, and refinement of health information systems. The Master of Health Informatics and Information Management (MHIIM) degree program is an online program that will prepare students to develop information systems for quality patient care; facility reimbursement; medical research; health planning; and health care evaluation as required by the changing health care environment. Upon completion of the program, graduates will have a thorough knowledge of health care data resources administration, health care data security oversight, strategic and operational information resource planning, clinical data analysis, clinical classification systems, medical vocabularies, enterprise-wide master patient index systems, clinical decision support systems, information systems development and implementation of systems such as electronic health records. Two tracks in the MHIIM degree program allow students to emphasize either health informatics or health information management. The choice of track depends upon a student's career goals, rather than past education or experience. The Health Informatics (HI) track addresses design and development of information systems, with an emphasis on applied clinical informatics. Various certifications are available to graduates of the HI track, depending upon the graduate's previous work experience and career goals. The Health Information Management (HIM) track emphasizes management and administration of healthcare data and information systems. Additional electives taken in the HIM track allow the student to pursue eligibility for the RHIA certification exam of the American Health Information Management Association.
Following satisfactory completion of all requirements, the student will be awarded the master of health informatics and information management degree from the University of Mississippi.
The Master of Health Informatics and Information Management program has received SACSCOC approval through the University of Mississippi Medical Center's accreditation by Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACSCOC). SACSCOC information can be found at http://www.sacscoc.org.
The Health Informatics track leading to the Master of Health Informatics an Information Management Degree is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Health Informatics and Information Management Education (CAHIIM).
Students who complete the health informatics (HI) track are eligible to sit for the Certified Professional in Health Informatics (CPHI) national certification exam, administered by the American Health Information Management Association's Commission on Certification for Health Informatics and Information Management (CCHIIM).
Results from the August 2015 - July 2016 outcomes assessment reported to CAHIIM in the 2017 Annual Program Report (APAR) indicate: - 100% employment rate for graduates actively seeking employment - 100% employer satisfaction rate - 100% graduate satisfaction rate for graduates working in the field (80% overall)
Students who complete the HIM with RHIA eligibility track are eligible to sit for the Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA) national certification exam, administered by the American Health Information Management Association's Commission on Certification for Health Informatics and Information Management (CCHIIM) by virtue of CAHIIM accreditation of the baccalaureate program.
