TITLE: Student Stipends
PURPOSE: To establish policy for students receiving
Graduate Student Stipends from the John D. Bower School of Population Health.
POLICY: A student may receive a Graduate Student Stipend from the Bower School
of Population Health.
The designation
of an individual holding a Graduate Student Stipend is an academic, not
employment, designation. Therefore, the
Graduate Student Stipend does not grant the student the ability to receive
employee benefits. Neither FICA (i.e., social security) nor state retirement is paid. Students awarded a Graduate
Student Stipend are responsible for filing taxes according to the current
federal and state laws and regulations.
The Graduate Student Stipend will be awarded
for the amount and time as
described in the scholarships and stipend offer letter. Graduate Student Stipends
are paid beginning the first day of the semester in which they are first
enrolled and ending with the last day of the last semester for which the stipend
is awarded.
A graduate
student awarded a Graduate Student Stipend will engage in research activities
directly related to their program of study under the supervision of in
collaboration with a member of the Bower School of Population Health faculty. As a condition of the award of the Graduate Student Stipend, the student is expected to maintain continuous enrollment on a full-time
basis and remain
in Good Academic
Standing as defined
in the SOPH Good Academic
Standing policy. Additional academic program
requirements may be required.
Enrolled
students who are also UMMC employees are not eligible to receive Graduate
Student Stipends.
If a student receives
an individual grant where the award for a stipend is less than the current
stipend rate awarded by the Bower School of Population Health, the program may supplement
the stipend.
If a student
takes a Leave of Absence (LOA) or withdraws from their academic program, the
student is no longer eligible for the Graduate Student Stipend. See the SOPH
Leave of Absence and SOPH Withdrawal policies.
