Several eminent Medical Center leaders were honored during the UMMC Medical Alumni Awards Dinner Aug. 17 at the Fairview Inn in Jackson. Dr. Owen B. “Bev” Evans, front row, right, was named the alumni chapter’s Distinguished Medical Alumnus. The other recipients were winners of the chapter’s 2013 Hall of Fame Awards: the late Dr. Wallace Conerly, Dr. J.J. (Buddy) Connors, Dr. Robert L. Elliott Jr., Dr. Norman C. Nelson and the late Dr. Winfred L. Wiser. Cardiovascular Center takes shape in heart of campus

Work is continuing on what will be the new Cardiovascular Center at the University of Mississippi Medical Center. Construction on the facility, located in the heart of campus behind University Hospital, began in February 2012. Designed by architecture firm CDFL, the building will include three cardiac catheterization labs, two electrophysiology labs, 17 private patient recovery rooms, a non-invasive cardiovascular department, staff offices and a conference room. Chris Burney, executive director for planning, design and construction, said the project is moving along smoothly and “should be fully enclosed by early 2014.”
