School launches fundraising bid for lab makeover

Third- and fourth-year dentistry students spend long hours and late nights in the School of Dentistry clinical laboratory, where they hone their skill in crafting crowns, bridges, dentures and other restorations for their patients. Housed on the fourth floor of the School of Dentistry, the lab has remained virtually unchanged since it was built nearly 34 years ago.

The Dean's Corner

Welcome to the third edition of UMMC Dentistry. As interim dean, this is my first Dean's Corner article. I would like to start off by telling you some of the things we have been doing since my appointment began in February 2010.

Golf tourney nets $20,000 for endowment

When Gulfport dentist Dr. Chris Spraberry died suddenly last year, his former classmates from the UMMC’s School of Dentistry decided to pay tribute to him by raising money to establish an endowed scholarship in his name. The Class of 1995 Endowment in the Name of Chris Spraberry was announced in April.

Group aims to endow SOD's 1st lectureship

In its effort to foster growth and excellence in the practice of dentistry across the state, the Mississippi Association of Women Dentists is raising funds in an effort to fully endow the first lectureship at the School of Dentistry.

OMS ramps up new dual-degree track

Dr. Ronald Caloss likes to think of oral and maxillofacial surgery as a bridge between the dentistry profession and the medical world.

Students get a jump on research

Dr. Amol Janorkar, assistant professor of Biomedical Materials Science, has had some extra hands to help with his liver tissue-engineering research project, thanks to the time volunteered by research-savvy dentistry students.

SOD gains new faculty members

Dr. Ahmad A. Abdelkarim, a native of Jordan, joined the School of Dentistry faculty in September as an assistant professor of Care Planning and Restorative Sciences.

Welch named SmilePlus award winner

Billy Welch, biomedical engineering technician for the School of Dentistry, was awarded the Outstanding Customer Service Award in July.
