For the past year-and-a-half, on a portion of the Medical Center campus, graves holding the remains of patients who resided at a long-shuttered institution have yielded an assortment of personal items. Many are as poignant as they are revealing.

After multiple rounds of chemotherapy and radiation were unable to treat Patricia Hurrod’s aggressive cancer, a new treatment offered by UMMC might have been her only hope. As the first patient of CAR T therapy, Hurrod’s prognosis looks better than ever.

Building a Stronger Future for Nursing in Mississippi, funded by a $3.8 million grant from the Bower Foundation, has graduates who are now nursing educators. The project provided scholarships and stipends for registered nurses to earn their MSN degrees at the UMMC School of Nursing.

Nathan Campbell graduates this week with a PhD in experimental therapeutics and Pharmacology, but his start in the field of research began when he was just a sophomore in high school. After 11 years of dedication to obstetrics research, he will continue his work at UMMC.

Medical Center faculty and staff often are recognized regionally, nationally and internationally for their academic or medical achievements. These accolades place UMMC among health science centers worldwide.
