Mississippi is notorious for having among the worst cancer survival rates in the country. In fact, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates cancer deaths in Mississippi to be 20% higher than the national average.

The 2024 School of Dentistry Alumni Awards honored two outstanding School of Dentistry faculty members — Dr. Mitch Hutto (‘83), who has been teaching at the University of Mississippi Medical Center since 2005, and Dr. Alexa Lampkin (‘17), a dentist new to teaching who has made strides in her early career.

Now in his second year of medical school, Thomas Moore keeps close by a reminder of why he’s here. It’s inscribed in his memory – and on his wrist.

Winter’s arrival in central Mississippi this month probably seemed too early for those who struggle to manage their allergies or asthma. UMMC allergists have updated their suggestions to better manage those conditions in 2024.
