Children’s of Mississippi’s pediatric intensive care unit is the only one in the state – and one of 33 across the country – with the AACN’s Beacon Award status. The honor recognizes excellence in patient care as well as work environment and the nursing workforce.

Josi Johnson, queen of the Mid-South Little Britches Rodeo Association, was at home visiting Children’s of Mississippi patients Friday since she’s grown up with care at the state’s only children’s hospital. Born with the genetic condition Stickler Syndrome, the Decatur native is a barrel-racer and a freshman at East Central Community College.

For as long as she could, Gabrielle “Gabi” Morris kept her secret from almost everyone. The secret has a name – and when she learned it, she saw nothing ahead of her but a life of embarrassment and anger. Instead, it gave her a purpose and set her on a personal journey toward a destination she has reached at last.
