Dr. Scott Rodgers, who has taught everything from middle-school science to medical school psychiatry, is now responsible for thousands of teachers and students as the Medical Center’s new associate vice chancellor for academic affairs. The former department chair is bringing to bear his qualifications as an educator, administrator, long-time leader and student of human behavior.

With more than 25 years of experience in health care, Chief Operations Officer Kernizan comes to Children’s of Mississippi from Palms West Hospital, an inpatient acute care and children’s hospital in West Palm Beach, Florida, where she was COO.

Every day, UMMC’s police, security officers and emergency response staffers put their lives on the line to keep patients, visitors, employees and students safe. On Sept. 1, the Medical Center sponsored a Blessing of the Badges ceremony to honor all of the first responders for their dedication when they wear the badge. It exemplifies the department’s core values of integrity, professionalism, respect, accountability, transparency and empathy.

Fourth-year School of Dentistry student Lauren Thames has a passion not just for oral health care, but for something sweet: hand-decorated cookies. She baked more than 200 of her tasty wares to give to employees and students as a friendly gesture from her school.
