When breast or cervical cancer silently lurks in a woman’s body, early detection is paramount. UMMC’s Cancer Center and Research Institute is partnering with several other organizations to offer free screening for women who qualify August 20 at the Jackson Medical Mall.

The sold-out comedy show set for later this week at Hattiesburg’s historic Saenger Theater is an annual fundraiser that benefits Children’s of Mississippi among other causes. Laughs 4 Life’s contributions to the state’s only children’s hospital will surpass $200,000 with funds raised through this year’s event.

After two stints at the Medical Center, Rose Williams has worn more hats than she can count, along the way accumulating memories, mentoring students, training staff, supervising a number of operations and leaving an indelible impression.

The risk of contracting monkeypox in Mississippi is low, and the way it spreads is different than how the highly contagious Omicron strains spread, Medical Center experts say. But for both viruses, some advice on avoiding infection is the same: frequent handwashing and avoiding contact with infected people.

Medical Center faculty and staff often are recognized regionally, nationally and internationally for their academic or medical achievements. These accolades place UMMC among health science centers worldwide.
