In a state where traumatic injury is common, Medical Center caregivers treat many patients suffering from profound blood loss. These patients must have platelets – stored at room temperature, but only good for five days – for their blood to clot. But what if they received cold platelets that have a shelf life almost triple that time? That’s the focus of a clinical trial at UMMC and five other U.S. academic medical centers that do a stellar job of treating such patients.
