With her passion for the arts and her compassion for others, Frances Anne Fortner brightened the lives of everyone who knew her. On Tuesday, the Medical Center dedicated its Healing Arts Program to the daughter of UMMC’s Tom Fortner and artist Laurilyn Fortner. This series of creative and performing arts events will be known as “Franny’s Hour.”

There were no caps or gowns, but there were diplomas and smiles as the John D. Bower School of Population Health honored the first graduates of its Executive Masters in Population Health Management Program. The three alumni have already taken the lessons they learned and translated them into their clinical practice.

With the support of the Centers for Disease Control, the UMMC Department of Family Medicine is collecting data to determine how well it is meeting five of the CDC’s guidelines for opioid prescribing. Providers in the department are also using a new tool in Epic that reminds them to meet and check certain criteria.
