Family medicine specialists aren't the only physicians in short supply in many Mississippi towns and rural counties: Medical specialists are, too. The Office of Graduate Medical Education is trying to address this need by sending residents and fellows to hospitals and clinics, helping them meet the growing demand for medical specialists.

In the lab, classroom and community, Dr. Mike Ryan has dedicated his time to training young scientists. On Tuesday, UMMC presented the Regions TEACH Prize, the institution’s highest honor for educational excellence, to Ryan during a ceremony that recognized UMMC's 2019 Nelson Order inductees.

The weeks leading up to Commencement are otherwise known as "Honors Day Season" at UMMC, when students who excelled in the classroom, in the clinical arena or at the research bench receive special recognition from their respective schools.
