Students at Jackson’s Barack Obama Elementary School receive monthly lessons from UMMC trainees through Project REACH, a partnership that reinforces and enhances science education through hands-on learning. The interaction also helps graduate students and postdoctoral fellows gain teaching experience.

For several years, 4 North caregivers have struggled with hand hygiene compliance, failing to wash their hands or foam in and out before entering and exiting patient rooms. By engaging leadership from various departments and reinvigorating the floor’s staff, 4 North caregivers recently hit a milestone: 100 percent compliance, according to Jeff Dunaway, director of performance improvement.

At the stroke of midnight Jan. 1, hospitals were required to publish their rates online. But patients who “shop around” for the highest quality health care at the cheapest possible cost are forewarned: UMMC revenue cycle experts say patients' actual out-of-pocket expenses could differ from what is listed on the Internet.
