Gabrielle Smith became UMMC’s youngest patient to undergo a heart transplant less than a month after a tragic house fire claimed the lives of her parents and one of her sisters. Now a year old, she’s thriving thanks to the care of the Children’s Heart Center and her great aunt and guardian, Cindy Thompson of Bassfield.

Decades have passed since the Mississippi State Hospital for the Insane in Jackson closed. Many of the patients who died there came to a lonely and unmarked end. But today, more and more of their descendants are coming forward to restore their history in a Medical Center-led effort advanced by the awarding of a federal grant.

Everyone agrees that proper exercise, just like good nutrition, can play a huge role in health and wellness. But how much physical activity is enough to make a difference? New federal guidelines are concentrating not so much on duration of exercise, but on people getting out of their seats and moving – no matter how often, or for how long.
