Davis Beasley’s heart was giving out, and that put so much strain on his liver that it, too, was failing. The UMMC patient’s only option was a heart-liver transplant, a rare procedure performed only 35 other times this year in the U.S. Two transplant teams – one heart and one liver – performed the life-saving procedure on Nov. 15.

The space that once held rainbow-tinted sand during last year’s groundbreaking is now a bustling construction site for a $180 million pediatric expansion. The seven-story tower that medical leaders say will transform pediatric care in Mississippi is set to open in fall 2020.

The John D. Bower School of Population Health has partnered with Dispensary of Hope, a nonprofit organization that distributes medications free of cost to pharmacies serving low-income and uninsured populations, to study Dispensary’s activities to determine best practices for improving health outcomes and decreasing health care costs.

Several interesting events are scheduled for the upcoming weeks at the Medical Center.
