The Jackson Heart Study, a collaboration between UMMC, Jackson State University, Tougaloo College and the community, has been working to improve African-American cardiovascular health for nearly 20 years. The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute announced Tuesday its renewed support for the JHS. The next phase includes a fourth physical exam of all participants, educational opportunities at UMMC and a partnership with the Mississippi State Department of Health.

Some high school seniors know without a doubt what they want to be “when they grow up.” The School of Nursing’s Freshman Early Entry Program is a collaboration with Ole Miss, Mississippi State, Millsaps and Tougaloo that locks in a nursing career path for entering freshmen and relieves the stress that can accompany waiting for that nursing school acceptance letter down the road.

In spite of what you may have been told, you can use days off to catch up on sleep – or so suggests a study conducted in Sweden and published in a prestigious scientific journal. For their part, UMMC experts say the findings intrigue them. But are they swayed?

A national publication ranks UMMC's diversity and inclusion programs among the nation's "inspiring programs;" a dental academy bestows a travel award to a UMMC graduate student; a state physicians group taps a UMMC faculty member for a special award; and the Department of Medicine honors its own outstanding faculty.
