When Mike Sands got his cancer diagnosis, he did what any good news reporter would do: He got the jump on his own story by educating himself and following doctors’ orders. Sands’ WLBT/Fox 40 friends and UMMC's oncology team are by his side as he leads the "normal" life of a guy in his late 20s.

Alex Mullen and his powers of recall have excelled in worldwide competitive memory competitions in Singapore and China. The medical student's ability to memorize mile-long sequences of numbers, words and dates, as well as random orders of card decks, drew the attention of the national media, not to mention a TV game show. In December, he entered another global competition, hoping to shine an already memorable resume.
