The model of tenure has been perceived as a “job-for-life” guarantee for physicians and scientists at medical schools and teaching hospitals. It was conceived as armor for academic freedom, a reward for individual accomplishments and a valued faculty recruiting tool. But the percentage of faculty members seeking it at places like UMMC has faded.

Ryan Fulford, a student in the B.S.N. to Ph.D. program, is working with Special Olympics International and the Public Health Accreditation Board to make wellness programs inclusive to people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. His inclusive health guidelines will soon be a part of the accreditation process for public health agencies across the country.
