Baby-Friendly status signals optimal mother-newborn care

After five years of team work and effort across disciplines and departments, UMMC has earned status as a Baby-Friendly birth facility. It is the only hospital in the Jackson metro area to carry the distinction from Baby-Friendly USA, the U.S. authority for implementing the global Baby-Friendly Hospital Initiative sponsored by the World Health Organization and the United Nations Children’s Fund.

Both nationally and in Jackson, the rate of HIV infection is considered epidemic. But a study of 600 young black men in Jackson who have sex with men, co-investigated by a UMMC professor and a colleague from the University of Kentucky, finds that a single intervention for that population can significantly reduce the chances of contracting or spreading HIV.
