UMMC had a record year for extramural support, receiving 316 grants and awards totaling more than $65 million in fiscal year 2017. The money supports all aspects of the Medical Center, from basic bench science to cutting-edge clinical trials and from educational programs to community outreach.

Once considered less-qualified practitioners of a form of alternative medicine, osteopathic physicians, or DOs, are valued today for their skills and their ability to fill gaps in primary care, especially in a state like Mississippi where those shortfalls loom large.

Dr. David Pasco and those in his lab were recognized by the journal Planta Medica for work that reveals bacteria in Echinacea - not other components - contribute to its immune-boosting power. For decades, the UM researcher has studied how to harness the power of plants to enhance a person’s immune system.
