When a rural city’s hospital closes, access to health care becomes abysmal overnight. It happened in Belzoni, a 2,000-resident town in Humphreys County where just three primary care physicians practice. That will change when UMMC’s Community Care Clinic opens in late fall, providing after-hours acute care that allows residents to get care at home instead of driving 30 or more minutes to another community.

UMMC and Mayo Clinic biobanks are collecting blood and health histories as part of a clinical trial to help further research on cancer, diabetes and other diseases. By collecting 10,000 samples in Mississippi, the Mayo Clinic hopes to increase the number of samples available to researchers and broaden the ethnic groups represented.
