Because most rural Mississippi hospitals can’t attract emergency physicians to their ranks, nurse practitioners and other physicians end up staffing their emergency rooms. These hospitals are bound to receive patients with acute traumatic injuries. The skills required to assess, stabilize and transport trauma patients to a facility that can provide a higher level of care has been taught for more than 30 years in Advanced Trauma Life Support at UMMC.
