Access policy

Individuals may come into the Rowland Medical Library and use the available print resources.

Entrance doors will lock at 8 p.m. Monday-Thursday and Sundays, and at 7 p.m. Fridays. Those wanting to enter the library after these hours must swipe their official UMMC ID badge at the entrance doors.

Campus Police can be contacted if an unauthorized person attempts to enter the library during restricted hours.

Unattended children and library access

To ensure that the library environment is maintained to support study and research, children entering the library must be under the direct supervision of an adult at all times. No child should be left in the library unattended at any time .

  • When a child has been in the library for an extended period of time and there is no adult with him/her, library staff will question the child.
  • The child will be asked his/her name, name of parents and if parents work at the Medical Center.
  • If a parent works at UMMC, he/she will be contacted and told of the library policy and requested to pick up the child.
  • If parents cannot be identified, the library director will be notified and UMMC Campus Police will be called.
  • The library staff cannot be responsible for any child's safety while in the library.

Disruptive patrons

Rowland Medical Library is an area of the UMMC intended for quiet study and research.

  • When an individual or group becomes too noisy or disruptive, library staff will request the noise/activity level be lowered.
  • If the disruptive behavior continues, library staff will tell the disruptive patron that Campus Police will be called and the individual must leave the building.
  • UMMC Campus Police will be contacted by library staff if the patron does not leave, or the behavior issue is not settled.

Food and drinks

Covered beverages and snacks are permitted in the library. Beverages and snacks may not be consumed in the stacks, computer area or in the Archives and History facility. Non-compliance with this policy may result in loss of this privilege.

  • Trash must be places in the proper receptacles.
  • Meals or messy and aromatic food are not allowed inside the library (e.g. sandwiches, pizza, salad, soup, hot plate lunches, etc.) Please consume these items in the outside lobby before entering the library.

Cell phones

In order to provide an atmosphere conducive to study, cell phone ringers should be turned off or switched to vibrate when inside the library. Patrons should use a low voice when placing or answering calls. The library staff reserves the right to ask patrons to move to a more acceptable place inside the library or to the outside lobby if the patron is disturbing others.
