I have been a Family Doctor more than half my life. I had a private practice in and around the Jackson area for 18 years before joining the University faculty in Family Medicine in 1999. I had a wholistic practice that incorporated acute and chronic illnesses of adults and children; procedures including flexible sigmoidoscopy, uterine biopsies, toenail removal, skin lesion removals and biopsies, suturing of lacerations, and trigger point and joint injections; hospital care and emergency room evaluations of my patients; nursing home and homebound patients. I provided counselors in my office for a number of years to address the emotional and mental needs of my patients. I was also a preceptor for medical students from 1982 until 1998, hosting a third year medical student for four weeks in my private practice. I started and ran my clinic as a solo practitioner who shared expenses with other family physicians. I set up and opened three different clinic locations. I can bring the aspect of life/practice outside of academic medicine to my teachings. I enjoy promoting self-care and self-awareness to the students and residents. Helping to promote Family Medicine and provide health care providers for Mississippi is my goal and there are 22 students in this year's graduating class interested in Family Medicine.
