In 2000, Dr. Russell joined the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at UMMC. While at UMMC, he has become one of the nation’s leading orthopaedic trauma surgeons, recognized as an expert on obesity in orthopaedics. His creation of the clamshell osteotomy has been widely used to correct malunions (crooked bones). He has authored and co-authored many publications, presented both nationally and internationally on his specialty of orthopaedic trauma. Dr. Russell has been selected multiple times as Professor of The Year. In February 2013, Dr. Russell was selected to serve as the Chairman for the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery. Dr. Russell was honored as the inaugural recipient of the James L. Hughes MD Endowed Chair in 2014. In July 2021, he stepped down as Chairman of Orthopaedic Surgery to assume the role of CEO of University Physicians. Dr. Russell maintains a clinical practice specializing in pelvic fractures, bone infections and non-healing fractures. Dr. Russell has completed two Ironman triathlons in New Zealand and South Africa. Currently, Dr. Russell occupies his spare time with CrossFit and golf. George is married to Stephanie Russell, also an Ironman, and has three daughters, Kristen, Jessica, and Ivy.
