I was born in Jackson Mississippi, the fourth son of a local physician. My interest in a medical career started during a summer job as a lab assistant at the Mississippi Baptist hospital (1970). I matriculated at the University of Mississippi in the fall of 1971 and was accepted into medical school at the University in the fall of 1974. In my fourth year I married Melinda Austin of Cleveland Mississippi. After graduation I did a residency in Family Practice at the medical college of Georgia in Augusta and was board certified in 1981. I entered practice with my father in law, Dr. Samuel Duff Austin, in Cleveland MS. In 1984 and I started my residency in Pathology at the University of Mississippi and join the faculty of the university in 1987 as an instructor and was board certified in Pathology in 1988. I joined the department of laboratory medicine and pathology at East Carolina University in 1988. During my appointment as assistant professor at ECU I was a general surgical pathologist, renal pathologist and director of electron microscopy. I joined William Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak Michigan in 1992 with similar service responsibilities. In October of 2005 I moved back to Mississippi working for Ameripath which was later acquired by Quest diagnostics. I join the faculty at the University of Mississippi department of pathology in December of 2013. My assignment involve the outreach pathology services to five area community hospitals. I assumed my current responsibilities in April of 2016.
