I became interested in child neurology in 1997 when my son, Manning, was diagnosed with early infantile epileptic encephalopathy. Nobody could tell my wife or me what caused it. By 2001, I had decided to go to medical school to learn as much as I could about Manning's condition in order help him or other children like him. I completed medical school and a pediatric neurology residency and began practicing. All the while, all testing on Manning continued to give us no answers. In 2016, just after my son's 19th birthday, we learned he had a pathogenic mutation in a gene called CDKL5. This gene had not been discovered until my son had been alive for seven years. While nothing I did or learned was able to "cure" my son, I have been transformed into something I could have never imagined when he was born. From heartbreak has come great fulfillment.
