When the Food and Drug Administration first approved Gardasil as a vaccine against human papillomavirus, it targeted preteens through age 26. The FDA has raised that ceiling to 45 for both men and women, giving many thousands more who receive the immunization a much greater chance of averting a number of cancers, especially cervical cancer in women. UMMC now holds five patents associated with elastin-like polypeptides, a versatile family of synthetic molecules that could change how diseases are treated. The efforts of multiple UMMC faculty members have resulted in a portfolio of ELP-related intellectual property that is one of the largest in the United States.

Procedure eases complications related to fluid around lungs

Medical thoracoscopy provides relief for those who suffer with effusions, or an unusually large amount of fluid around the lungs that can result in coughing, trouble breathing, chest pain and fever. The minimally invasive procedure generally performed at academic medical centers is now available at UMMC after a 15-year hiatus.
