Our Quality Program

Becoming a High Reliability Organization (HRO)

UMMC has adopted a systematic approach to guide us on our quality improvement journey. Developed by The Joint Commission Center for Transforming Healthcare, this model is intended to help transform health care into a high reliability industry with a safety record comparable to commercial aviation. 

The High Reliability model identifies three pillars or domains of an organization that must be engaged to achieve sustainable improvement:

  • Commitment of leadership
  • Development of a culture of safety centered on both patients and employees
  • Dedication to continuously improving care through data analysis, understanding variations in performance, and developing targeted solutions to drive improvement

Working diligently in these three domains that contribute to high reliability, organizations can enhance patient safety, care outcomes and the patient experience. In two years, UMMC has:

  • Identified and closed gaps in performance, measured against goals
  • Established teams focused on specific improvement projects
  • Developed a single, organization-wide quality scorecard to measure progress and widely share the results
  • Established Leadership Rounds – monthly walk-rounds in which 100-plus UMMC acacdemic, clinical and administrative leaders engage front-line staff on issues affecting quality and then debrief on their interactions
  • Implemented quarterly departmental performance reviews on patient safety and quality with physician and nurse leadership
  • Initiated quarterly reporting to the governing board, the Mississippi Institutions of Higher Learning Trustees
Since implementing the High Reliability model in 2016, UMMC has made substantial progress toward the overall objective of zero preventable harm to patients.
