The primary Clinical Ethics Consultation Service (CECS) objective is to support patient autonomy and the compassionate, patient-centered delivery of medical standard of care by helping patients, families, physicians and other providers develop strategies that respect patient wishes and values across the course of difficult medical realities. As seasoned clinicians formally trained in ethics, CECS faculty can assist patients and families as they confront ethical dilemmas as well as strengthen peer and vertical communications among those charged with supporting these patients through their deliberations and determinations. The UMMC Center for Bioethics and Medical Humanities serves Mississippi as an ethics training and learning resource. Any Mississippi community hospital can schedule CECS consultations for help in resolving ethical dilemmas involving physicians, patients, families and other frontline providers and staff.
