Rabies Prophylaxis Guidelines

Category I

For patients with:

  • Touching, feeding of animals or licks on intact skin
    • No exposure/no prophylaxis needed if history reliable

Category II

For patients with: 

  • Minor scratches or abrasions without bleeding or nibbling of uncovered skin
    • Give vaccine only

Category III

For patients with:

  • Single or multiple transdermal bites or scratches
  • Licks on broken skin
  • Contamination of mucous membranes with saliva (i.e. licks)
  • Suspected contact with bats
    • Give rabies immunoglobulin plus vaccine
