Heart disease is the leading cause of death for both men and women. In fact, nationally, one in every four deaths can be attributed to heart disease. In Mississippi, cardiovascular disease is also the leading cause of death, accounting for more than one third of all deaths in the state. Additionally, Mississippi’s cardiovascular disease mortality rate is the highest in the nation.
UMMC researchers are hard at work seeking better ways to prevent and treat heart disease. As February is American Heart Month, we are currently highlighting the cardiovascular studies taking place at UMMC. Please check back often as we will be adding new research areas of interest in the future.
