Health Innovation and Transformation Center

Health care is going through an upheaval that will see it move from a transactional model that fixes people when they are sick to managing care for the population. The Health Innovation and Transformation (HIT) Center brings together our history of innovation with the disruptive opportunities afforded by technology, creativity, and the needs of Mississippians with our numerous health challenges. 

The center's mission is to advance UMMC’s education, research, and health care missions by supporting and encouraging innovations from UMMC faculty, staff, students and the broader Mississippi innovation community. The HIT Center also sources innovative solutions to health challenges faced in Mississippi from all over the world.

The HIT Center is set to be a catalyst and conduit for innovative solutions that will provide tangible benefit to the health care provided by UMMC and the overall health of Mississippians.

Goals

  • Improve UMMC’s capacity to support health innovation throughout Mississippi by improving processes for technology transfer, piloting products and ideas, and performing quality evaluation.
  • Spark an innovative culture throughout all three missions at UMMC and across the state by encouraging discovery and innovation through education, programs, incentives, and promoting early successes.
  • Gain a deeper understanding of the health and health care issues faced in Mississippi and the capacity for Mississippi to support health care innovation by engaging with local and statewide health programs and partners. Community outreach will also be critical for the HIT Center to support UMMC’s objective to improve the health of Mississippians. According to the CDC:
    • We know that poverty limits access to healthy foods and safe neighborhoods and that more education is a predictor of better health. We also know that differences in health are striking in communities with poor SDOH [Social Determinants of Health] such as unstable housing, low income, unsafe neighborhoods, or substandard education. By applying what we know about SDOH, we can not only improve individual and population health but also advance health equity.
  • Develop and discover impactful, implementable, innovative solutions to these challenges.

Innovation, past and present

Dr. John D. Bower transformed renal care, improving the lives of thousands of people with end stage kidney disease. Generations of individuals and families have been changed by his innovation and tenacious spirit. Dr. Arthur C. Guyton and Dr. James D. Hardy were early pioneers in a tradition that saw UMMC attain global leadership in Physiology and conduct the first lung and heart transplants. From these experiences we will foster an environment that supports students and faculty who not only want to heal the person before them, but who are also challenged to find a better way, a safer way, or even a whole new way to heal, help, or serve others. We will help these innovative thinkers put ideas into action and provide resources, connections, and expertise for success. Our goal is to raise up the current generation of faculty and students not to just revere Drs. Bower, Guyton and Hardy, but to stretch themselves and model themselves after them.

That pioneering spirit continues. UMMC and has commercially licensed the most complete digital model of human physiology. We are nationally recognized for driving innovation in health care. In 2016, CIO.com recognized UMMC with its CIO Top 100 award for its effective partnerships to drive technology innovation in healthcare. Additionally in 2016, UMMC received the Analytics 50 award from Drexel University for having one of the top 50 analytics projects in the country.

In 2015, UMMC was recognized by the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) with its Learning Health System Research Award for being a “pioneer organization” in analytics. Also in 2015, UMMC received the College of Health Information Management Executive (CHIME) Collaboration of the Year Award for an outstanding industry partnership with Jvion for our work on predictive analytics.
