Facility Management makes frequent checks/observations of the physical plant to note problem areas (peeling paint, non-sealed surfaces, leaks, lighting problems, etc.). The CCR maintains a file of maintenance requests. Principal Investigators and their laboratory personnel should contact the facility manager (601-984-1387 or 601-984-1385) regarding all CCR physical plant maintenance items.
Light timers, thermostats and humidistats located in animal housing rooms or support space are set by the CCR to maintain compliance. Personnel must not attempt to adjust these devices. Rooms/areas that need adjustments should be brought to the attention of the facility manager who will take corrective actions with the assistance of UMMC physical facilities.
The primary defense against vermin infestation is a sound, efficient sanitation program. Consistent housekeeping in CCR areas and in laboratories will greatly aid efforts to control vermin. The CCR employs the use of non-toxic boric acid insect bait in animal housing areas. The bait is safe to use in animal rooms. CCR policy is to euthanize all rodents found and captured outside of the primary housing area.
The CCR maintains three walk-in coolers for storage/disposal of animal carcasses (G084, G-044, and R820-3). Barrels are present in each cooler for the placement of carcasses. All animal carcasses should be contained within heavy plastic bags, labeled with the investigator's name and the date of animal death/euthanasia, and placed within the barrels. The CCR will manage the incineration of the carcasses and sanitation of the barrels and cooler.
