Developmental Origins of Diseases

Kidney Disease

Kidney disease is also called kidney or renal failure and involves the gradual loss of kidney function. The main function of the kidneys is to filter waste products and extra fluid from the body. In the later stages of renal failure, the kidney loses its ability to excrete waste products and extra fluid from the body. Low birthweight is associated with a reduction in nephrons in the kidney. The nephron is the working unit of the kidney that plays a critical role in the excretion of wastes and fluid from the body. In addition, low birthweight is associated with faster progression and more severe outcome in patients with end-stage renal disease.
