Services are available to 1) currently enrolled students in the School of Dentistry, School of Graduate Studies in the Health Sciences, School of Health Related Professions, School of Medicine, School of Nursing, School of Pharmacy, and School of Population Health at the University of Mississippi Medical Center (UMMC); 2) any individual currently designated as a resident or fellow at UMMC; and 3) any faculty of UMMC requesting assistance for educational development.
Academic consulting services may address transition to professional school, time management, study skills, stress management, testing strategies, interpersonal and communication skills, and clarification of career goals. Personal and mental health counseling are not provided and individuals will be referred to recommended resources if needed. Support and consultation are also provided to faculty, assisting in their development of the relevant skills and behaviors essential to teaching adult learners.
Academic consulting services provide evaluation and assistance to students, residents, fellows, and faculty at UMMC. Based on the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), the Office of Academic Support can disclose information to appropriate institutional officials for legitimate educational purposes. The Office of Academic Support will not disclose any information to individuals external to UMMC without permission/consent of the participating student, resident, fellow, or faculty. In situations involving danger and/or risk to self or others, confidentiality cannot be maintained and contact of individuals internal or external to UMMC can occur. These situations include 1) intent to harm self or others; 2) report of child abuse or neglect; 3) report of abuse or neglect of a vulnerable adult; or 4) if, in the academic consultant's judgment, there is demonstration of endangerment to self due to diminished mental capacity or emotional functioning. In addition, the Office of Academic Support must comply with the law and release information subpoenaed by a court for use in judicial proceedings.
In order to provide optimal services, academic consultants may consult with other members of the professional staff and/or faculty of UMMC.
The Office of Academic Support only provides services for educational and academic development. If an emergency requiring immediate care or psychiatric intervention occurs, the individual should contact a current health care provider, go to the nearest emergency room, or call 911.
The Office of Academic Support evaluates and improves its services by conducting research and evaluation. Individuals receiving services may be asked to participate in current research studies or selected information may be used in research projects conducted at UMMC. All information utilized for research purposes is anonymous and confidential.
