Ceremony fetes distinguished med alum, HOFs
Six current and former members of the UMMC faculty and their families were recognized during the UMMC Medical Alumni and Friends Awards Dinner Aug. 16 in Jackson.
Dr. James Keeton, left, vice chancellor for health affairs and dean of the School of Medicine, received the 2014 Distinguished Medical Alumnus Award, joining newly inducted UMMC Medical Hall of Fame members or their family, from left, Dr. William Lamar Weems; Marilyn Currier, wife of the late Dr. Robert Currier; Dr. Neal Lehan, son of the late Dr. Patrick Lehan; and Dr. Mac Greganti.
Dr. PonJola Coney, senior associate dean for faculty affairs, professor of obstetrics and gynecology and director of the Center on Health Disparities at the Virginia Commonwealth University School of Medicine, was unable to attend the event.
Coney was the first School of Medicine graduate to be appointed dean of a medical school (Meharry Medical College). Currier was the first chair of the Department of Neurology. Greganti is the John Randolph and Helen Barnes Chambliss Distinguished Professor of Medicine at the University of North Carolina School of Medicine, Chapel Hill. Lehan served for 25 years as chief of the Division of Cardiology. Weems served for more than 20 years as director of the Division of Urology. (Click to enlarge image)
