Charles R. Mullen, longtime comptroller at UMMC, died June 7. He was 71.
A native of Paducah, Ken., Mullen grew up in Lexington and graduated from Lexington High School. He earned a B.S. in accounting at Mississippi State University and a M.B.A. at Mississippi College.
While working for the Department of Defense Contract Audit Agency, a chance audit assignment led him to a job offer at the Medical Center. He would only accept an 18-month contract, but stayed for 43 years, rising through the ranks to lead the institution's accounting and reporting efforts for the last 20 years as comptroller.
While at UMMC he served on the center's Insurance Committee and Student Housing Committee. He was a member of the Mississippi Federal Credit Union's Supervisory Committee and, at his death, was the senior member of the credit union's Board of Directors, serving the board as secretary and treasurer at various times.
Funeral services will be at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, June 10, at Wright and Ferguson Funeral Home in Ridgeland, preceded by visitation at 11 a.m. Burial will follow in Odd Fellows Cemetery in Lexington.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to First Baptist Church of Lexington or the Batson Children's Hospital.
