Physiology faculty welcome cardio physiologist
Dr. Rugmani Padmanabhan Iyer, a cardiovascular physiologist and biochemist with expertise in myocardial infarction, microsurgeries, echocardiography and proteomics, has joined the Medical Center faculty as an instructor in physiology.
After doing her bachelor's in biochemistry at Delhi University, New Delhi, India, in 2002, and her master's in biochemistry at the Allahabad Agricultural Institute Deemed University, Uttar Pradesh, India, in 2004, Iyer earned the Ph.D. at the University of Texas Health Science Center, San Antonio, in 2011. Iyer did postdoctoral training at the Cardiovascular Proteomics Center at San Antonio, Texas, from 2011-13, and at the Mississippi Center for Heart Research at UMMC since 2013.
The author or coauthor of 11 articles in peer-reviewed professional publications and four abstracts, Iyer is an active member of several professional organizations, including the American Heart Association, the American Physiological Society and the American Society of Investigative Pathology. Iyer is also funded by an American Heart Association Fellowship for two years. Iyer's research interest is in understanding the effect of MMP-9 and MMP-12 inhibition on post-myocardial infarction.
