Prepsters pound pavement for Cancer Institute
Jackson Preparatory School seniors Anna Grace Buchanan, left, and Cara Lee Crawford donate proceeds from their 5K race, "Pounding the Pavement for a Cure," to research at the UMMC Cancer Institute on March 20.
It is the second year the students have donated proceeds from the race to the institute.
Dr. Srinivasan Vijayakumar, Cancer Institute director, said the two-race total of $27,060 will be used to purchase a cryostat machine. Researchers will use the machine to cut frozen tumor tissue samples for histological slides.
Buchanan and Crawford each lost a family member to cancer and organized the race to honor their loved ones. The Jackson Prep class of 2014 adopted the second race as its senior project and hosted the event in December at Liberty Park in Flowood.
