Pathology faculty welcome laboratory director
Dr. Volney Eugene Pierce Jr., laboratory medical director of River Oaks Hospital and Madison River Oaks Hospital, has joined the Medical Center faculty as an assistant professor of pathology.
After receiving the B.S. in zoology summa cum laude from Louisiana Tech University in 1977, Pierce earned the M.D. at the Louisiana State University School of Medicine, Shreveport, in 1981. He did an internal medicine internship at UMMC from 1981-82 and an anatomic and clinical pathology residency at the Medical College of Georgia from 1982-86.
Pierce joined Pathology Associates of Alexandria, Rapides Regional Medical Center, Alexandria, La., in 1986 and served as a clinical instructor at the Tulane Medical School and laboratory medical director from 1992-93. He moved to the River Region Medical Center, Vicksburg, in 1994 and served as laboratory medical director before joining AmeriPath/Quest Diagnostics in 2004.
A fellow in the College of American Pathologists and an active member of the Mississippi State Medical Association, the Central Mississippi Medical Society and the North American Society of Head and Neck Pathology, Pierce serves as a laboratory inspector for the College of American Pathologists and is coauthor of two articles in peer-reviewed professional publications.
