Physiology faculty welcome de Castro Brás
Dr. Lisandra Eunice de Castro Brás, a postdoctoral fellow at the Jackson Center for Heart Research at UMMC, has joined the Medical Center faculty as an assistant professor of physiology.
After receiving a degree in biotechnology engineering from the University of Algarve, Faro, in 2002, de Castro Brás earned the Ph.D. in biological sciences at London's Brunel University in 2009. de Castro Brás then served as a postdoctoral fellow in the Department of Drug Discovery and Development at the Italian Institute of Technology, Genoa, from 2009-11, at the San Antonio Proteomics Center at the University of Texas Health Science Center, San Antonio, from 2011-13, and at the Jackson Center for Heart Research since 2013.
An active member of the American Heart Association, the American Society for Mass Spectrometry and the American Physiological Society, de Castro Brás serves as editor of the Journal of Cardiology and Clinical Research and the Journal of Biological Research and Development, and as a reviewer for a number of professional publications. de Castro Brás is also a reviewer for the AHA Peer Review Committee Cardiac Biology Reg and the author or coauthor of 17 articles in peer-reviewed professional publications, four book chapters and 13 abstracts.
de Castro Brás' research interests include applying multidimensional, translational and proteomic approaches to investigate the mechanisms whereby the left ventricle remodels post-myocardial infarction and discerning the mechanism of scar formation post-MI, particularly products of proteolysis, and developing strategies to diagnose, slow or reverse the progression of heart failure.
